The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will need Means to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Chambers at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Tyler Guyton at pick No. 34 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Khyree Jackson at Round 3, Pick 37 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in pick 103, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mohamed Kamara at the 126th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wild overpay on Justin Eboigbe in No. 129, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach for Luke McCaffrey in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and AJ Barner was the payoff at the 180th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Myles Cole in pick No. 193; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Julian Pearl, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on JD Bertrand at No. 214, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steele Chambers at pick 219 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They talked themselves into Bub Means at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Josh Proctor at slot 231 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
