Of all the ways to open, the Packers chose the head-scratcher, spending pick 91 on Jaden Hicks with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still wide open. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sainristil. Every board in the league had Bortolini lower, and that gap is the story.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 41 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in the 58th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mike Sainristil at Round 3, Pick 25 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 91 on Jaden Hicks with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Isaac Guerendo in the 126th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanor Bortolini in the Round 5 slot, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in slot 202: Trente Jones for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in No. 219, with Tanner McLachlan worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Jalen Sundell in the 245th pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
They took Tyler Owens at par in the 255th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
