When the story of this class is written, it opens with Maurice Smith at the Round 5 slot, a reach of 88 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Whatever Bo Nix becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get a passer to set the clock by, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Adisa Isaac at the 50th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jasheen Davis in the 97th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at pick No. 130, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
LaDarius Henderson at No. 133 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Maurice Smith in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Michael Barrett in the 160th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Curtis Jacobs this early at the Round 5 slot. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Theo Wease Jr. at pick No. 179 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Value said wait; Antwaun Powell-Ryland in slot 230 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
