The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Danny Stutsman, the No. 91 name on the board, sitting there at the 167th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
The Ratledge reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Circle this one: Walter Nolen at pick No. 55 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tate Ratledge at Round 2, Pick 26 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Tre Harris at the 89th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Gunnar Helm in No. 124 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Devin Neal at the 127th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Danny Stutsman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Cobee Bryant in slot 243 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
