Call it larceny. Sonny Styles sat on the board until No. 142, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
Reaching for Evans left real value on the table behind him. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The back end got a real overhaul.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Taking Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 4 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay James Pearce Jr. at pick No. 68 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 83rd pick is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jake Majors at the 105th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Sonny Styles all the way to No. 142, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kyren Lacy this early at slot 220. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Jaishawn Barham here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Mitchell Evans in Round 7, Pick 27 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
