The VJ Payne selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 45 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Jones steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Dillon Thieneman in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Christen Miller at the 58th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Daylen Everette in slot 75 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached into another round for Jude Bowry, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Logan Jones reach pick No. 111 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Kaytron Allen at No. 127, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy little value on Joe Royer in pick 133, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid a round early for Beau Stephens in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
VJ Payne in pick No. 149 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
