The tape said wait; the Bears did not. Anthony Lucas went at Round 2, Pick 25, a good 53 picks before the board was ready. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
A reach on Zion Young in pick No. 25; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Anthony Lucas in pick 57 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had cheaper options than Malachi Lawrence at the 60th overall pick, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jalen Farmer at slot 89 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Max Llewellyn at the 129th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Onyedim in Round 7, Pick 23 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Alan Herron in slot 241; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
