Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 202nd overall pick on Patrick Payton, a name the board had a full 45 spots lower. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

They banked enough surplus on Thompson to cover a lot of smaller sins. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 30
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Michael Taaffe · S · rank 68
Michael Taaffe in slot 63 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Jude Bowry · OT · rank 128
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jude Bowry in the 95th overall pick, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Mason Reiger · LB-EDGE · rank 147
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mason Reiger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Brenen Thompson · WR · rank 94
Brenen Thompson at pick 131 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Tanner Koziol · TE · rank 163
Tanner Koziol in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · DJ Campbell · OG · rank 182
A quiet steal in pick 191: DJ Campbell for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 174
A cornerback of that caliber at the 198th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Patrick Payton · DL-EDGE · rank 247
Patrick Payton at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Keyshaun Elliott · LB · rank 217
By-the-book stuff, Keyshaun Elliott at pick No. 212 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Jaydn Ott · RB · rank 236
Jaydn Ott slid further than he should have, and No. 247 is lovely value for the running back. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
