The rest of the league had time to spare on Braelon Allen; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 46 spots ahead at No. 109. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
They jumped the gun on Jackson Powers-Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the 56th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Payton Wilson at pick No. 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good price on Mike Sainristil in the 85th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Bucky Irving at slot 93, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Malik Washington in pick No. 105 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 9 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Jaheim Bell at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Jefferson in pick 183, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dwight McGlothern. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
