After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Reaching for Wiley left real value on the table behind him. However the rest shakes out, James at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Amarius Mims at pick 36 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Kool-Aid McKinstry in Round 2, Pick 8, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick No. 67, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking DJ James in slot 78 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in the 100th pick: Dominick Puni for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Johnny Wilson graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at the 152nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a linebacker like Curtis Jacobs reach slot 222 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
