The Dolphins looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Sedrick Van Pran at pick No. 31 regardless, 59 picks early.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hardy. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
So much rides on Sedrick Van Pran that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a building block for the line, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Brandon Dorlus went about where he belonged in No. 54. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Christian Haynes in pick 63; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Johnny Dixon, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Drake Nugent at Round 5, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They read the board right and Javion Cohen was the payoff at pick No. 158. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid a round early for Aki Ogunbiyi in pick No. 172, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
JD Bertrand in No. 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jalen Green a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steal is underselling it; Daequan Hardy at slot 242 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
