The Patriots' one glaring miss is safety, a need they left exactly as they found it.
Reaching for Logue left real value on the table behind him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sanders.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Troy Fautanu in the 34th pick, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and Ja'Tavion Sanders was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 4. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Fisher in No. 103. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in slot 129, where Darius Robinson graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Hart at pick 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Michael Barrett in the 182nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Fair-plus on Jase McClellan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Zion Logue at the 232nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
