The Giants clearly saw something nobody else did in Josh Proctor, taking him 110 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. However the rest shakes out, James at that price is a win they earned.
The veteran additions, De'Von Achane chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
R2.18
· Pick 50
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 49
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in No. 50, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.22
· Pick 54
· Zak Zinter
· OG
· rank 82
Zak Zinter in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Mekhi Wingo
· DT
· rank 63
Mekhi Wingo in the 69th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.10
· Pick 74
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 99
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Payton Wilson well ahead of where he belonged. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Adonai Mitchell
· WR
· rank 73
A tidy little value on Adonai Mitchell in the 78th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.23
· Pick 86
· D.J. James
· CB
· rank 75
D.J. James slid further than he should have, and pick 86 is lovely value for the cornerback. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.36
· Pick 99
· Audric Estime
· RB
· rank 106
Audric Estime in slot 99 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.5
· Pick 105
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 133
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.22
· Pick 122
· Darius Robinson
· DL-EDGE
· rank 140
Darius Robinson at the 122nd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.6
· Pick 142
· Luke Lachey
· TE
· rank 143
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke Lachey. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.8
· Pick 183
· Josh Proctor
· S
· rank 293
This one needs a full-page explanation: Josh Proctor in Round 6, Pick 8, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
