Nobody else had Barryn Sorrell anywhere near the Round 5 slot. The Cowboys did, by 140 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The Neal steal is the beam this whole class leans on. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid up for Cameron Williams at Round 1, Pick 19 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 51 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value with a capital V on Jalen Royals in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 119 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Lathan Ransom, who had no business lasting to pick 120. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Barryn Sorrell in the 148th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
The board fumbled Barrett Carter all the way to pick 156, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Cobee Bryant in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Oronde Gadsden II at the 170th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Devin Neal at pick No. 173 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
