Nobody else had David Walker anywhere near the 109th overall pick. The Patriots did, by 186 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Ersery at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Hairston is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Shavon Revel Jr. at par in pick 41, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value with a capital V on Cameron Williams in No. 48, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Donovan Jackson in pick No. 53 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Danny Stutsman at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maxwell Hairston at cornerback with quarterback and tight end open.
Aireontae Ersery in No. 84 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Ozzy Trapilo a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Jihaad Campbell while clear needs at quarterback and tight end sat open.
David Walker at the 109th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Tahj Brooks still on the board at pick 119. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Jordan Burch graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Elijah Roberts. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Jack Bech went about where he belonged in slot 144. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Joshua Gray higher than slot 154, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Cobee Bryant was the payoff at pick 170. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Value said wait; Jason Henderson in Round 6, Pick 26 says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Barryn Sorrell at the 208th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tim Smith in the 218th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A conviction pick on Aydan White at No. 220 that the board grades a round light. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Shilo Sanders at pick No. 221 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Justin Walley in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
By-the-book stuff, Bryan Felter at Round 7, Pick 42 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
