You build a draft on nights like this. Omarion Hampton had no business being available in slot 77, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Very little went wrong, and the A is earned.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The veteran additions, Luke Goedeke chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 20 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Luther Burden III at slot 51 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Josh Conerly Jr. in pick No. 61 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dylan Fairchild at pick 69 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Tyler Warren at the 72nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Omarion Hampton at Round 3, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Darien Porter was still sitting there in the 104th pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cam Skattebo at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Hayden Conner at No. 147 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
