Thirty-one other rooms let Zak Zinter slide, and the Chiefs were the ones holding the card at pick 127. Highway robbery.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing. Their trades came out a wash either way.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Max Melton at the 64th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jaylen Wright in the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Dominick Puni went about where he belonged in pick No. 91. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in pick 95, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 27 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Justin Eboigbe slipping to slot 158 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Luke McCaffrey at the 172nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
