The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Pearl value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They will need Bortolini to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Jer'Zhan Newton in pick No. 11, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Cedric Gray at Round 4, Pick 8 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Blake Fisher is a better player than No. 129 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value with a capital V on Justin Eboigbe in slot 157, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tanor Bortolini at the 167th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Jordan Jefferson in pick 177; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Julian Pearl at the 230th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quiet steal in slot 232: Sheridan Jones for less than the market said. It adds depth where they could use a little.
