The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Kedon Slovis, taking him 50 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
A real head-scratcher, Zach Frazier in No. 41 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached a country mile for Blake Fisher at pick No. 88, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaden Hicks in the 91st overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had Elijah Jones higher than pick 126, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Khristian Boyd at No. 169 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Garret Greenfield in the 202nd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, JD Bertrand at Round 6, Pick 44 squarely in line with his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They reached into another round for Blake Watson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kedon Slovis this early at pick No. 255. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
