You build a draft on nights like this. Josaiah Stewart had no business being available in the 238th overall pick, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. Need was not the driver here.
Circle this one: Wyatt Milum at the 38th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nothing to complain about; Jalen Royals went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 77 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Ashton Jeanty at pick 104 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Fairchild still on the board at Round 5, Pick 6. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Lander Barton in No. 217 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Tre Harris at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Josaiah Stewart at Round 7, Pick 22 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
