Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Chiefs came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Coleman steal is the beam this whole class leans on. With tight end and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
Reaching for Ford left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ennis Rakestraw Jr.. A minor itch, scratched.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 40th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 43 on T.J. Tampa with tight end and quarterback unsolved.
They robbed the room for Keon Coleman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
DeWayne Carter in Round 3, Pick 32 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Brenden Rice at pick 96 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They did well to land Braelon Allen in the 115th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Brennan Jackson in No. 133 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Kitan Oladapo at slot 158 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They talked themselves into Jaylan Ford at pick 172, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Johnny Dixon at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
