The phones were a trap the Chiefs kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
They will need Suamataia to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
The Newton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a building block for the line, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Keon Coleman at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Michael Hall Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 64. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Brenden Rice at the 95th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Josh Newton, who had no business lasting to No. 133. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; Malik Mustapha went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 172 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
