The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Taulia Tagovailoa went at pick No. 224, a good 52 picks before the board was ready.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and running back still on the board. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Amarius Mims come to them and pounced at No. 34. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in pick No. 35, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid up for Brandon Dorlus at slot 64 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A curious use of pick 66. Tight end and running back needed the pick; a cornerback in Khyree Jackson did not.
Brenden Rice at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fabien Lovett at the 133rd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
