Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent pick No. 219 on Josh Proctor, a name the board had a full 25 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Barton.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Graham Barton in Round 2, Pick 9 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 58th pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Dominick Puni at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cole Bishop at pick 91 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Isaac Guerendo in slot 126 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in the 169th overall pick with a little surplus value in Marist Liufau. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Julian Pearl at the 202nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Josh Proctor in No. 219, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bub Means. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Solomon Byrd at Round 7, Pick 35 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
