The board owed the Chiefs one, and it paid up: Jaylin Simpson, the No. 137 name on the board, sitting there at the 211th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will need Travis to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A clean, defensible pick in No. 32 with a little surplus value in Amarius Mims. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Jermaine Burton in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Max Melton in the 64th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Devontez Walker at the 94th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tyler Davis this early at pick No. 95. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for James Williams in pick 124, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Foster at Round 4, Pick 31 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Dylan Laube in slot 132, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Travis. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dallin Holker at the 159th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kamal Hadden in the 173rd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Nathaniel Watson in slot 176 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Jaylin Simpson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Anthony Gould at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A conviction pick on Darius Muasau at pick 251 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Garret Greenfield in pick No. 252 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
