You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Carson Beck in pick No. 76. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. That Bell pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 3 of 9 of the wish list covered.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.15 · Pick 15 · Monroe Freeling · OT · rank 25
In the 15th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though they paid up to get him. Need was not the driver here.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Chris Bell · WR · rank 40
Chris Bell slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Carson Beck · QB · rank 120
They left a pile of value on the table to take Carson Beck this early at pick No. 76. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.35 · Pick 99 · Anthony Lucas · DE-EDGE · rank 110
They paid up for Anthony Lucas at pick 99 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
