The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in Julius Welschof, taking him 82 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. On value alone, Jurkovec makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 24th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
Troy Fautanu in Round 2, Pick 1 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at No. 56 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had cheaper options than Johnny Wilson at slot 58, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy little value on Marist Liufau in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Mustapha a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Will Shipley in No. 126 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
De'Corian Clark in the 163rd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 239, where Phil Jurkovec graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Julius Welschof at pick 247 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
