Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent pick No. 256 on Frank Crum, a name the board had a full 38 spots lower. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jennings.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in No. 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jaden Hicks at pick 88 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Elijah Jones slipping to slot 126 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mason McCormick in the 144th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in the 160th pick, where Luke McCaffrey graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Khristian Boyd at the 163rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kitan Oladapo is a better player than Round 5, Pick 33 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Cornelius Johnson for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Magee. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.

Trevin Wallace at slot 238 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Ryan Watts in No. 245 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Trey Taylor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Crum in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Donovan Jennings in the 257th overall pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
