Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the 63rd pick on Jaishawn Barham, a name most had 65 spots down the list.
Klare falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaishawn Barham. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 31: Max Klare for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jude Bowry. It fills a real need, too.
They took Harold Perkins Jr. at par in No. 131, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at the 171st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ephesians Prysock in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
VJ Payne in pick 198 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Cole Payton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Aiden Fisher in pick No. 212, more than the board wanted. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Adam Randall in the 247th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
