There is reaching, and then there is Carson Steele at the 219th overall pick. The Packers jumped the board by 94 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
On value alone, Knight makes the weekend a net positive. The Bishop pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and quarterback. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jonathon Brooks at the 41st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zach Frazier in pick 63 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kamren Kinchens a notch or two before his time. A minor itch, scratched.
The board had Kris Abrams-Draine higher than No. 88, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Johnny Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cole Bishop at safety with edge rusher and quarterback open.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 123 with a little surplus value in Tyler Davis. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at pick No. 125 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Brandon Coleman in pick 168; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on JD Bertrand at the 201st pick that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Carson Steele at Round 6, Pick 44 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
McCallan Castles at the 245th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tyrice Knight at No. 255 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
