You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Kedon Slovis in pick 244. The final tally is a middling C-.
Getting Torrence where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
If Brian Thomas Jr. and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A reach on Patrick Paul in No. 56; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sedrick Van Pran at Round 3, Pick 8 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at the 87th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Jaylan Ford at pick No. 174, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ro Torrence in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Zion Logue in No. 233 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
