The rest of the league will want that one back. Cornelius Johnson tumbling to the Packers in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
They are betting McGregor proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Hit on Tyler Guyton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They reached into another round for Christian Haynes, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Jaylen Wright in No. 63; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Junior Colson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Circle this one: Javon Bullard at pick 91 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Ricky Pearsall at pick No. 94 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Josh Newton at the 124th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent slot 126 on James Williams, a safety they were not short of.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Tommy Eichenberg while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Braiden McGregor at the 133rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Malik Mustapha in pick 169 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
JD Bertrand at the 202nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
By-the-book stuff, Gabe Hall at Round 6, Pick 44 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Trey Knox at slot 245 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a wide receiver like Cornelius Johnson reach pick No. 255 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
