There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Carson Steele a full 82 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. The Legette pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Good price on Payton Wilson in the 56th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Xavier Legette in pick No. 87 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Tanor Bortolini in Round 5, Pick 38; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Cedric Johnson in No. 216, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They talked themselves into Miyan Williams at the 233rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Carson Steele. The roster fit checks out.
