The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
Magee at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Good price on Cole Bishop in pick 108, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nothing to complain about; Josh Newton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to pick No. 157. It fills a real need, too.
Tanor Bortolini at slot 167 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cornelius Johnson a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jordan Magee at the Round 7 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
