There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took David Walker a full 92 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The Hancock value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mason Taylor in the Round 2 slot, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for David Walker at pick No. 79, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Charles Grant all the way to slot 123, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 207 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jordan Hancock at the 238th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
