Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent Round 5, Pick 6 on Elijah Roberts, a name most had 39 spots down the list.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value.
They took Tyler Booker at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Carson Schwesinger in pick 77 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ozzy Trapilo. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
RJ Harvey in Round 4, Pick 4 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Elijah Roberts at No. 144 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached into another round for Upton Stout, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Craig Woodson in Round 7, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
