The Patriots did not so much draft Andrew Armstrong as overpay for him, 33 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The Belton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Jihaad Campbell in the 37th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board had cheaper options than Tre Harris at slot 38, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Mason Taylor enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 69. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good price on Omarr Norman-Lott in pick No. 77, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Devin Neal here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at No. 145 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Clay Webb at pick 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let R.J. Mickens come to them and pounced at the 222nd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Andrew Armstrong well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
