The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Carson Steele at the Round 6 slot regardless, 107 picks early.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Bishop pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.
That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Patrick Paul at the 58th overall pick, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamren Kinchens. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Value said wait; Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cam Hart a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A want over a need in slot 93: Cole Bishop adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
By-the-book stuff, Will Shipley at the 104th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Javon Foster at the 113th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Mekhi Wingo was still sitting there in No. 126, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They liked Tommy Eichenberg enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 130. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
JD Bertrand at pick 169 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at Round 6, Pick 27 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Carson Steele at pick No. 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Marcellas Dial, who had no business lasting to the Round 7 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
