You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Johnson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 9 of the wish list covered. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in pick 50, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at Round 2, Pick 19 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
James Williams in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tykee Smith at the 161st pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Grayson Murphy went about where he belonged in No. 171. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Cornelius Johnson at Round 6, Pick 35 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
