Of all the ways to open, the Eagles chose the head-scratcher, spending slot 66 on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still wide open. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Oladapo. Every board in the league had Johnson lower, and that gap is the story.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 50th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 66 on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Gabriel Murphy at Round 3, Pick 27 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elijah Jones at pick 123. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Johnny Wilson in No. 129, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at slot 161, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Kitan Oladapo is a better player than the 171st overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
They let Kendall Milton come to them and pounced at pick 210. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
