The Packers bet big and early on McCallan Castles, 87 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
The Greenfield pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 52nd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in pick 63; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaden Hicks in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, a safety that was not the priority.
They went early on Will Shipley in Round 3, Pick 28, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Brenden Rice at par in pick 94, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Javon Foster at the 124th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tommy Eichenberg. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, Brandon Coleman in No. 154 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 33, where Sione Vaki graded well above the range. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
This one needs a full-page explanation: JD Bertrand in the 202nd overall pick, miles early. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Nathaniel Watson in the Round 6 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Garret Greenfield in slot 245 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for McCallan Castles at slot 255, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
