The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on McGlothern: C.

by BBB · 2024 NFL Draft · 12 picks · 3 steals · 2 reaches

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Patriots shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is McGlothern. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

They will need Fisher to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

So much rides on Marvin Harrison Jr. that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
By-the-book stuff, Marvin Harrison Jr. at Round 1, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 23
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick No. 34. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 58
Braden Fiske is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Mahogany. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
Zak Zinter in slot 103 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 106
No edge and no loss on Braelon Allen in No. 104; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
Blake Fisher at the 105th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 132
A tidy little value on Christian Jones in Round 5, Pick 1, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 173
Braiden McGregor at slot 180 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
You do not let a cornerback like Dwight McGlothern reach the 182nd pick and blink. They did not. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.1 · Pick 221 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 220
They took JD Bertrand at par in No. 221, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Eric Watts · DL-EDGE · rank 230
A conviction pick on Eric Watts at pick 222 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
