The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: T'Vondre Sweat, the No. 45 name on the board, sitting there at the 137th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The cost of the Goncalves reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Fair-plus on Bo Nix, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in pick 68, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
They jumped the gun on Matt Goncalves, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 137 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Jared Wiley was the payoff at No. 180. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had Khristian Boyd higher than the Round 6 slot, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kitan Oladapo in Round 7, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
