You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to quarterback, which was the need that mattered most. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Flournoy pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Hopper pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They went early on Edgerrin Cooper in the 41st pick, and the value did not follow. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in the 58th overall pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Gabriel Murphy at No. 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Beau Brade at pick No. 126 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid up for Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 169 when waiting would have done the job. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Trente Jones at Round 6, Pick 27 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ryan Flournoy at pick 219. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kimani Vidal in Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, LaDarius Henderson in No. 255. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
