The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 70 spots for Zion Logue, and value like that does not grow back. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end went begging.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. On value alone, Cooper makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.15
· Pick 15
· Laiatu Latu
· DL-EDGE
· rank 10
A clean, defensible pick in No. 15 with a little surplus value in Laiatu Latu. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R1.23
· Pick 23
· Brian Thomas Jr.
· WR
· rank 27
In pick No. 23 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Amarius Mims
· OT
· rank 24
In slot 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24
· Pick 56
· Xavier Worthy
· WR
· rank 55
They paid sticker price for Xavier Worthy in the 56th pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.32
· Pick 64
· Patrick Paul
· OT
· rank 69
Patrick Paul in pick 64 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 49
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Edgerrin Cooper in Round 3, Pick 4, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 95
They took Khyree Jackson at par in slot 91, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.32
· Pick 95
· Gabriel Murphy
· DL-EDGE
· rank 92
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Gabriel Murphy, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
R4.8
· Pick 108
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 106
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.9
· Pick 145
· Jordan Travis
· QB
· rank 172
They reached into another round for Jordan Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
R5.11
· Pick 147
· Anthony Gould
· WR
· rank 142
Nothing to complain about; Anthony Gould went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.38
· Pick 174
· Tanor Bortolini
· C
· rank 187
Tanor Bortolini in the 174th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Zion Logue
· DL
· rank 286
Zion Logue in the 216th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.13
· Pick 233
· Trevin Wallace
· LB
· rank 233
Trevin Wallace in No. 233 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
