The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took DeMonte Capehart at No. 242 regardless, 150 picks early. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims at No. 24 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 10, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Khyree Jackson at pick No. 87 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braelon Allen at the 110th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylan Ford in slot 173 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Devin Leary well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevin Wallace. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take DeMonte Capehart this early at slot 242. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
