The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Calen Bullock fell into pick No. 164.
Whatever Bo Nix becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
So much rides on Bo Nix that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Brock Bowers in No. 34 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Xavier Worthy at pick No. 61 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Jordan Morgan was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabriel Murphy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had Dominick Puni higher than No. 103, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Michael Hall Jr. at Round 5, Pick 1 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Calen Bullock in the 164th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Dwight McGlothern here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Ryan Flournoy at pick 231 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
