If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. DeMonte Capehart at pick No. 242 is 150 spots clear of where he belonged. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
Adonai Mitchell in Round 1, Pick 30 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Zach Frazier at pick No. 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Matt Goncalves at the 87th pick, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in pick 93, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cam Hart in slot 99 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaylan Ford at No. 173 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trevin Wallace in pick 213 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Devin Leary at slot 231, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
DeMonte Capehart at the 242nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
