Call it larceny. Troy Franklin sat on the board until the Round 3 slot, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Reaching for Eboigbe left real value on the table behind him.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Bo Nix in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Troy Franklin at No. 68 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Christian Jones at slot 125 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Justin Eboigbe a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Dwight McGlothern in Round 6, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jha'Quan Jackson at the 193rd overall pick is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Garret Greenfield was the payoff at pick 231. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
