The board owed the Chargers one, and it paid up: Isaiah Williams, the No. 180 name on the board, sitting there at the 225th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Chargers indulged a want in Gray while a need in quarterback stayed open.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Cole pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nice patience on Junior Colson, who had no business lasting to the 69th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A premium they did not need to pay, Blake Corum a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Leonard Taylor III in pick No. 105 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cedric Gray at linebacker with quarterback open.
Blake Fisher at No. 121 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Theo Johnson at slot 140 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Myles Cole in pick No. 181 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Isaiah Williams at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Daijahn Anthony come to them and pounced at pick 253. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
